Rising Above Barriers to Uplift Communities

Christine’s Story

Christine Chepkemoi Semekal, founder and CEO of Oral Health Mashinani, grew up in a Pokot community in rural Kenya in circumstances that demanded resilience from an early age. When her parents divorced when she was three, her mother remarried as a second wife, a culturally recognized form of polygamous marriage in which a man may have more than one wife.

Christine became part of a family with six biological siblings and twelve step-siblings, where resources were stretched thin and the household relied on parents working as casual laborers.

With such a large household, life was never easy and school fees were a constant challenge. As a girl in a community where girls’ education was often undervalued, Christine understood that if she wanted to secure her future, she would need to take responsibility for it herself. Growing up in this environment highlights just how extraordinary her journey truly is.

Despite challenges, Christine excelled. Her strong performance in primary school earned her admission to a national school. Unfortunately, her parents could not afford the fees, and she was unable to join. Determined not to let this setback define her, she began searching for scholarship opportunities. After many rejections, she was awarded a full scholarship to Daraja Academy, a high school dedicated to empowering academically gifted girls from underserved backgrounds. Even when COVID-19 closed schools for more than seven months, she adapted to remote learning and maintained strong grades through discipline and determination.

After high school, financial uncertainty resurfaced, but Christine persevered. After numerous scholarship applications, she earned support from the GLOW Foundation, allowing her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Oral Health at Mount Kenya University. She graduated as a first-generation university student, a milestone that transformed the trajectory of her life.

Beyond academic support, the GLOW Foundation invested deeply in Christine’s personal and professional growth through mentorship programs, leadership workshops, and community engagement opportunities. This holistic support allowed her to thrive and discover her purpose beyond the classroom.

During her university years, Christine felt a growing responsibility to give back. She knew that without the generosity of those who invested in her education, her journey would have looked very different. On a visit to her home village, she noticed a significant gap in oral health education and access to care. Many children had untreated decay, frequent dental pain, and missed school as a result. Using her own limited funds, she began by supporting 17 children with basic oral health products and education. Their relief and renewed confidence solidified her purpose.

This small initiative grew into Oral Health Mashinani, officially registered in 2024. Mashinani is a Swahili term meaning “grassroots” or “underserved communities” and captures the heart of her work in reaching children and families who have limited access to dental care.

Since its founding, Oral Health Mashinani has reached over 5,500 school children through school-based outreaches, oral health lessons, screenings, and distribution of essential hygiene products. Christine also extends her impact through community radio programs and podcasts, and she is developing initiatives to help communities affected by high fluoride levels in drinking water, working toward solutions for dental fluorosis prevention.

Making a Difference

Christine has received several awards and scholarships recognizing her academic excellence and humanitarian service. She is also invited to speak at conferences and has been featured on local television and radio programs.

Christine’s leadership has been recognized nationally. In 2025, she received the Betty Myers Memorial Scholarship Award for excellence in humanitarian service and community leadership—an achievement that opened doors to new platforms, including media features and speaking opportunities.

Christine often reflects on the people who helped her along the way, and on the responsibility she carries to uplift others. She hopes to pursue further studies in development to strengthen her impact across Kenya and beyond. She knows she is destined to change the world.

Christine recently represented Oral Health Mashinani at the inaugural Africa Mandela Leadership Summit in Nairobi, organized by Ndaba Mandela. Anchored in themes of innovation, digital transformation, and economic empowerment, the summit challenged African youth to lead with vision, integrity, and solution-driven action. Her presence on this continental platform reflects a growing recognition that community-led oral health education is foundational to sustainable development.
